Mumi and Bubi and Why You Should DIY Baby Food

Making your own baby food can be time consuming, tedious, and overwhelming at first. There I sat, researching for hours on end for recipes and gadgets to steam, puree, and store baby food. The options are endless and I thought surely there was no way I could pull this off while keeping my sanity.

I almost invested in a baby bullet or food pureeing system. It wasn’t until (ironically) I saw a commercial for baby food that I changed my perspective on everything. “It’s not baby food, it’s real food for babies,” the narrator was heard saying. Genius. I have a blender. I have my creativity. Why should I need anything more? From that moment on, I’ve been Chef Girl-ar-dee in the kitchen, whipping up mini meals for my baby, and I love every minute of it. If I’m cooking something for the house that is dairy free, I will even set aside a serving or two to mash or blend for J to have for the week.
Ground turkey, beans, spinach, and butternut squash
Yes, the process seems like a daunting task, but the payout is such a rewarding feeling.  I’ve been committing to mass cooking at least once a week, chopping meats, fruits and veggies, steaming, baking, blending, and mixing. Since baby is eating what we eat we are saving money, and preparing her meals with all colors of the rainbow is motivating me to keep up my healthy eating habits. Winning!

Mumi and Bubi freezing trays

These trays are a gem. I love that each cube measures exactly 1 ounce, so I know exactly how much she is eating. The trays are easy to clean, take up little to no freezer space (this was what sold me) and have lids to protect your food. My favorite part about the trays is the fact that the cubes are easy to remove– you push one end of the cube and it pops up at the other end. (If it doesn’t run a little warm water underneath and try again.) I make J’s food, freeze it, then pops the cubes out and place them in baggies in the freezer, like so:
My only gripe is the price tag for these trays. I paid $25 for the pair from AmazonWhomp, whomp.
All in all, I love making my own baby food because I know exactly what J is eating– I don’t have to worry about chemicals, and preservatives– and it gives me more of a reason to experiment with recipies. You know I love my creations!
