This will definitely be one of those comprehensive posts that continues to grow as I learn and understand how to care for our fine, fragile hair. And hopefully it will be the gift that keeps on giving. Please feel free to add on Pinterest, share, and bookmark this post. If you would like to add something, please let me know!

1. Work in larger sections whenever possible. Sometimes I banish sections all together, especially when I’m doing a wash and go and I desire volume. One of the hardest parts about working in sections is having to blend my hair together to avoid obvious parts from showing. Working in larger sections (or none at all) will help you achieve fuller curls with more body and volume.

2. Invest in a hair pic. Trust me, it’s worth it. My life changed drastically when I started using a pic for adding volume, rather than using my fingers or any other tools. No matter how much steaming I do to plump my curls, or fluffing I do to manipulate them, a hair pic has been the only tool that can truly reach my scalp and inner layers to add volume and height, without adding frizz.

3. It is so easy to go heavy handed when applying products to our hair. You’re so smitten by the chai tea, cupcake, fruity deliciousness before you that you can’t help but go in, and before you know it, you’ve a buttered, souflee, custard, jelly mess. Of course that was an exaggeration (hopefully), but if you take anything away from this, please remember that less can definitely be more. Product buildup is real, and so is over moisturization. Both can lead to breakage if you are smothering or coating your hair because you aren’t allowing it to breathe. In theory, hair care is just like other aspects of life where we value quality over quantity. If you are using a few quality products, there is no need to use the entire hair care aisle on your tresses. The same holds true with ingredients. 9 hair- healthy ingredients holds a much higher value than 29 decent ingredients. The product that contains more isn’t necessarily better, just as adding more products to your hair doesn’t mean its what is best or healthiest for your hair.

Thank you Valla! I agree, it can get discouraging, especially when thinking of new styling options. But there is still so much versatility in fine hair, and we have incentives like using less product and (possibly) less drying time in our favor!
